About the Long Island Latino Music Series

The Long Island Latino music series has been offered since 2002 at the Long Island Museum with the support of a NYSCA Folk Arts grant. This series features performances by singers and dancers from Long Island. The museum has long recognized changing local demographics and is committed to developing programs to support and interpret Latino culture.  Our 2008 exhibit (a Smithsonian traveling exhibit), Our Journeys/Our Stories: Portraits of Latino Achievement, highlighted the journeys and accomplishments of 24 remarkable Latino-Americans.  Over 1,100 students toured the exhibit with their school classes and more than 600 attended the Latino family festival we held in conjunction with the exhibit.  As part of the festival, we collected oral histories of Long Island Latinos.  We used the exhibit and the festival to reach out to the burgeoning Latino population on Long Island and to build connections with Latino groups and agencies.  We have also adopted a five-year collection plan that includes Latino heritage as a top priority.
